2012: MY year of indie music discovery

Hey everyone! Long time no blog... yet you still amaze me by sharing my humble little blog and continuing to read and come along on this amazing journey with me. I will forever be humbled and thankful to all of you for your continued support... artists and indie music fans alike!

I was asked the other day by one of my new Twitter friends @clindbeck to post a top 10 indie artist album list. I thought this was a very intriguing request, and as I was starting to figure out said list in my mind, I realized that there are soooooo many incredible artists that I've discovered just this year alone that there's no way I could possibly narrow that list down to just 10!

So what I'm going to do instead is give you a list of indie artists who's music I've discovered this past year. Actually, it's been over the past 2 years (roughly). My journey of indie music discovery actually started when I first found the music of David Gielan nearly 3 years ago... followed shortly thereafter by In Air (when they were known as Nobody Gets Killed), Mike Peralta and Lit On the Flash.

For those of you who are new to my blog, the aforementioned artists form the core of my indie music support and are the original catalysts for this journey. Their talents have allowed me to once again enjoy music and look forward to turning my iPod on again! I have effectively given up on mainstream radio, save for the continued support that I give Ryan Star as a proud card carrying member of the #RStarArmy!

If you follow me on Twitter or frequent this blog, you can easily tell who I tend to throw the majority of my support behind. I am unashamedly loyal to Lit On the Flash, David Gielan, In Air, Mike Peralta, David Geftakys, Euphoria Audio, You Vs Me, Broken Romeo, When Particles Collide, Naked on Roller Skates, Rum Honey, Roadside, Dungaree Dogs NYC & Message to Venus. This is in no way a knock on any other indie artists out there... I will support you all in whatever way that I can. But what it boils down to is I'm a fan and I just happen to have my favorites :)

So, if you'd care to know who my favorite indie artists are and/or whom I've discovered over the course of this past year, start clicking on the links below and get ready to go on the most intense musical journey I can offer you!

And don't forget to check out my list (on the right side column of this blog) of my favorite internet indie radio stations. Their continued success depends on YOU!

Note: Most of these links are going to be to either BandCamp or Reverbnation pages. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE navigate each page, as there are multiple albums on BandCamp and multiple recordings on their ReverbNation pages... you DO NOT want to miss or skip A SINGLE album or single, trust me!

So, there you have it... my top 10 list of indie artists! See why I said it would be nearly impossible to come up with a top 10 list? To any indie artist who may be following me on Twitter who I didn't mention in this post, I sincerely apologize. Please Tweet me and I will right any wrong that needs to be! There are soooo many of you who have reached out to me since I've started this blog. I promise, your time is coming!!!

And to my fellow indie music supporters from Twitter, @crazyforjensen, @tanja_love, @clindbeck and @magicgritz, thank you all so much for being a part of this with me. Each and every one of you holds a special place with me. I couldn't have gotten this far without your continued support and encourgement.

And to ALL of the indie artists that I've had the pleasure of discovering, THANK YOU for giving us back REAL music!

NOTE: When you begin to discover these insanely talented artists, you'll notice that on their BandCamp and ReverbNation pages, they tend to offer a lot of their music for free. Please, please, please, please... when you can, please help and support these artists by purchasing their music. Being an indie artist means that you are not signed to a major record label. You are either out there on your own or signed to an indie record label... and recording and releasing music does not come cheap! So please, if you find something you like, search for them on iTunes or Amazon or look for their music on any number of other online outlets, such as CdBaby.

New music from Aylin Eser!

Hello out there! Hope you've all had a wonderful weekend. How about some new music from another amazing indie artist?

Today I introduce you to Aylin Eser.

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Aylin brings the entire package to the table. Soaring vocals, thought provoking lyrics... tied together neatly by band mate and producer Will Larsen, Aylin gives us what is missing from nearly every female artist on mainstream radio today... originality. It's easy to be a pretty face and let someone work their magic behind the scenes to make the voice match the look. Not the case here.

I don't think there's a lyric around that wouldn't benefit from being sung by Aylin Eser. Find out for yourself and download her new EP, Arrows of Desire, from iTunes today. My ears are glad that I did... yours will too!

Canadian rock n roll from Kingdom of Few

You didn't really think the music was gonna stop there did you?

Making their long overdue appearance on this blog is Kingdom of Few.

Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Kingdom of Few is Curtis Butala on vocals, Alex Parks on bass, Reno Serani on guitar and John Clark on drums. Combine huge, stadium ready guitar riffs with hard pounding bass and drum beats and some of the baddest ass vocals this side of the 80's and you've got what rock radio is starving for today.

In case you were wondering what happened to original rock n roll, it's right here:

As is customary, I will not do this band the injustice of comparing them to any other band, past or present. I will gladly take them over any band on mainstream radio today and give them their chance to make their mark on music. I guarantee you it'll be one helluva mark!

Song of the day for 11/19/12: Straight Girls by When Particles Collide

So I Tweeted a little while ago that my daughters recorded the American Music Awards and were torturing me by making me watch it with them. That lasted up until the point when that Nicki Min-whatever-the-hell-her-name-is won some award and started talking. As if her music wasn't shitty enough, she had to open her mouth and prove me right.

So off to the solace of my iPod I went, and what saved my ears, along with my sanity? Sasha and Chris, aka When Particle Collide, that's who! Sure as hell am glad I have these two to fall back on! In this season of thanks, I give thanks to them!!!

Now lemme share Straight Girls with you! Enjoy :)

Rock n Roll brought to you by... You vs Me!

Hello everybody on the world wide web! Welcome again to my blog. Anyone ready for an artist feature? I thought you might be.... where should we venture off to tonight? I know. Let's see what our neighbors to the north have for us to check out.

You vs Me! hails from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. Band members Chris P, Mykle, Curly & Dave Q. Pyle bring an edge to rock n roll sorely missing from the mainstream.

Innovative...

Is an understatement when it comes to describing their sound.

You vs Me! is also one of the most fan friendly bands out there. And THAT says a lot when it comes to talking about indie artists and their interactions with their fans.

I apologize for being a blogger of not many words this time around. With music this damn good, words are sometimes hard to come by. Sometimes, it's best to just let the music do the talking for me!

Before I go, I will say this. As it's so often repeated within the confines of this blog, mainstream radio around the world is broken (thank you for the enduring quote David Gielan!). Record execs today are just like any other execs in corporate America (and all over the world). The bottom line is their bottom line. Line their pockets and shove the worst music out there today down the earholes of every tween that drives the radio plays and jacks up the record sales of soooo many not so talented acts. Notice I didn't refer to them as artists? We need someone to fix mainstream music so that future generations aren't stuck with classics derived from today's airwaves.

When my time is drawing near, I'm going to bury my own time capsule. And in that time capsule is going to be every song ever recorded by You vs Me! (along with many others of course) to show future generations that once upon a time, there was actually some bad ass music out there!

Catching up with In Air

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been posting much lately. I needed to take a step back from the blog and from social networking in general to recharge my batteries, so to speak... but I'm back now, and couldn't be more excited about this post!

If you've been following me on this journey, you know the purpose of this blog is to do whatever I can to help independent artists get their music heard. You also know that I am unashamed of showing favoritism. I don't necessarily do this on purpose, it's just that there are several indie artists that I tend to favor over the rest. THAT is just a product of me being a fan first and foremost. No offense to any other indie artist that has yet to make an appearance on this blog- YOUR time is coming, I promise!

That being said, we're checking back in tonight with one of my original favorite independent artists, In Air (formerly Nobody Gets Killed). I have been given the extreme honor by the guys in the band of getting an advanced preview of their upcoming EP. I'm not going to get into tooooo much detail at this point because I need time to find the words to properly give them credit for what I've heard so far. When the guys changed the name of the band to In Air to better reflect the direction their music was taking them, I for one had no idea that to expect from them. All I can tell you at this point is that to say that change is good doesn't even begin to touch the tip of this iceberg. I am completely blown away by what the guys have shared with me so far. I only hope that when the full EP is released and is shared with you on this very blog that the words won't escape me!

In the meantime, enjoy Blind and Naked by In Air. I CAN NOT WAIT TO SHARE THE NEW EP WITH ALL OF YOU!!!!

Jake Roche... the voice behind Lit On the Flash

Hello everyone out in the world wide blogoshpere! It's time for you all to get to know Jake Roche, the lead singer for Lit On the Flash.

One of the coolest things that's happened to me since I've embarked on this new journey to support indie artists is getting to know Jake and Kerry over the course of the past year. There aren't many LOTF shows that I've missed (I can probably count them on one hand) in this time, and each one is a new opportunity to get a chance to talk to them and gain a greater appreciation for them as people as well as artists. They each bring their own uniqueness to this band, and you won't meet two more passionate and genuine human beings. Thank you both for your friendship as well as some bad ass music!!!

I introduced you to a side project that Kerry released a few weeks back, Cobra vs Mongoose, so let's see what Jake has to offer us now shall we?

Think back to when I first introduced you to LOTF. I made mention that Jake and Kerry were former members of the alt/rock band Jeremiah Freed back in the early part of the 2000's (seems like such a long time ago!). When the band parted ways, Jake embarked on his solo career and gave the indie world his first album, Just Survivin'.

I never realized that I liked folk music until I heard this album. You can hear the foundation for Revolution Time being laid down track after track!

It wasn't until earlier this evening when Jake tweeted the link to his BandCamp page that I found a diamond in the rough. Last Beams of the Old Setting Moon carries on the folk inspiration of Just Survivin'.

If you've listened to Revolution Time, you'll recognize three of the tracks on this album: Thankless Job, Full Moon Coming Up and All Her Flowers. I love hearing the original interpretations of three of my favorite tracks by LOTF. This album, in Jake's words, is "pretty rough", but it's the real deal. Recorded in four days with one microphone on GarageBand, this is a labor of love. I'll take this over anything out on mainstream radio. Period.

Thanks for sharing this with us Jake!

Lit On the Flash celebrates 1 year of "Revolution Time"

Hello everyone! Time to kick this blog back into high gear!

I was Tweeting away while I was on vacation and realized that we let something very important to me pass without so much as a mention anywhere on the various social networking sites or this very blog... so it's time to right that wrong!

One of the greatest indie albums of all time, Revolution Time by Lit On the Flash, was released On September 1, 2011 and forever changed my life. To this day, it still amazes me how a little indie band from southern Maine can make music that blows away ANYTHING on mainstream radio today. My support for this band is unwavering. Thank you guys for giving us back music that matters!

I blog, Tweet, and share so much about this band that you're probably all getting tired of me by now! You know what? You better get used to it! Go out and find out for yourself why I'm such a huge fan. Check out and download their music, take in a live show (an experience of a lifetime- I PROMISE) and spread the word with me! You're Alive

Not knowing what to expect from these two since they first announced this joint project, I would be lying to you if I said this isn't the best work that these guys have done to date... and THAT statement is saying a lot considering what they've already given us!

David and David, you guys truly spoil your fans. I personally owe so much to you both for giving me back music that matters and means something again.

I can't wait to see what you're upcoming individual albums have in store for us. If this is ANY indication, this is gonna be one helluva year for us fans and you both!

Song of the day for 10/11/2012

Hey everyone! It's Thursday, which means it's a new day of music discovery!

Have I got a treat for you today. All the way from Rome, Italy... yes, Rome, Italy (who the hell would have know), our song of the day is brought to you by WakeUpCall!

This is a perfect example of what's wrong with mainstream radio here in America... and probably for the rest of the world as well. We get suckered by the radio stations who are fed the music they're allowed to play by their general managers, whose pockets are stuffed by the record labels to make sure their artists get all the airplay. DON'T THINK WE DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ASSHOLES ARE DOING!!!! That's what makes what I do on this blog worth the time and effort I put into it.

So without further ado, I give to you one rocking ass tune from Italy. Turn it up LOUD and enjoy The Devil's Round!

Hey there! Back again to share some more great indie music with you.

Cobra vs Mongoose

So much excellent indie music out there, so few hours in the day to take it all in and share it with you!

Let's see what my buddy Kerry Ryan is up to these days. Kerry is 1/3 of the best rock band ever, Lit On the Flash. Looks like he was jonesin' the other day and decided to bang out some new tunes. Hey Kerry, you should jones more often!

Cobra vs Mongoose is a psychedelic hard rock fans dream come true in all its digital glory. This is one of the greatest EP's released... EVER. I've been listening non-stop all morning and I don't think this is going to get old any time soon.

The only justice you can truly do this EP is to turn it up... LOUD.

Song of the day for 10/09/2012

Hello again! It's time to share some more of the best indie music around with you. I think today we should go back to my original indie favorite, David Gielan.

Thinking back over the course of the last nearly two years, I didn't realize exactly how bad off mainstream radio was. Then the music of Mr Gielan came into my life and there's been no looking back! Some day soon, the rest of the world is going to realize what I already know- David Gielan is here to fix the music business!

First off, enjoy Simple Days.

And while we're here, I'll give you a bonus tune from David... one that I have said this about many times before and will probably say many times again- All the Way is the single greatest indie vocal recording EVER! You can thank me later!

Song of the day for 10/08/2012

Hey everyone! Hope Monday has been treating you well... I know it has been me! You ready for some more music? Glad to hear it!

Let's get on with it then and see what Nicki Kris has in store for us today. I'm going to come right out and admit this now... I am a fan-boy when it comes to Nicki. She says, jump, I wanna know how high. Take a listen and find out why for yourself...

One of the strongest female indie vocals you're going to find anywhere, Nicki sings with passion unmatched by most mainstream female artists. Her time is coming, and I'll do whatever I can to help support her!

Jet W. Lee

We're going to get this week of music discovery off on a good note... settle in and get ready to discover Chicago based indie band Jet W. Lee!

One of the coolest things for me being a indie music blogger is when new artists reach out to me to review their music, hoping to get a mention on this blog. One such instance occurred a few hours ago when I received an email from Jet W. Lee asking me to check out their latest album Western Nightmare. I tuned in and haven't stopped listening to it since!

Again, based in Chicago, Jet W. Lee is made up of Jesse Johnson, vocals/guitar, Patrick Mangan, drums/vocals and Pierre Achille, bass. This trio brings original alternative rock to the table. Soaring guitar riffs, intelligent story-telling, and a sweet bass groove all wrapped up by some of the coolest drum beats all keep you moving from start to finish.

The band is currently on a 90-day tour of the U.S. in support of Western Nightmare. Check out their show dates... I highly recommend that you make a show if you can. I'll definitely keep track of this band and hope to see them over here on the east coast at some point. It's a show I will not miss!

Happy Sunday evening everyone! I decided to take a few days off from the blog... even managed to severely curtail my time on social networking during the last few days too! Feels good to cleanse yourself digitally every once in a while.

Now that I'm back, it's time to close out this weekend the right way. And to do that. we're gonna pay another visit to one of my original indie, as well as all-time favorite bands, In Air.

From their first album, Just A Seed, recorded when they were know as Nobody Gets Killed, enjoy one of my favorite In Air/Nobody Gets Killed songs (like they're not ALL my favorites), Sublime.

Hello, hello, hello!!!! Have I got a treat for you today! Over the course of the last few months, some of the best indie music I've discovered has been coming to us from our neighbors to the north. Slowly but surely, each of these bands is making it up to the world for Nickelback (sorry to keep rubbing that one in, but that joke never gets old!).
