Song of the day for 9/28/2012

It's that time again!

Let's go back to an old familiar friend of ours on this blog. How about some more rock n roll from the BEST rock n rollers of all-time (yes, I said that again!)... Lit On the Flash!

I'm pretty sure I lost a certain amount of hearing on the drive home from work yesterday blasting this one... I could lie to you and tell you it's one of my favorites off of their self-titled 2nd album, but they're really all my favorites. Eventually, every song from them will end up on here in some fashion multiple times... they're just that good!

Crank it up.... here's If It Comes by Maine's own Lit On the Flash!!!

Stone Kings

This post, I cannot help. Sometimes my hand is forced, and this is one of those occasions.

If you've ever wondered why I support indie artists, it's when things like this happen that show you why. As a supporter of the "little guy" I tend to get a few follows on Twitter by somewhat random indie acts. Sometimes though I believe them to be not so random. Case in point just happened this evening, and as I sit here typing away, I am blown away by this band out of Canterbury, UK. This band is the Stone Kings.

The Stone Kings are Gregg Stageman, vocals; Dom Holloway, guitar; Gary McCarthy, guitar; Dan Reene, bass and Gav Ranz, drums. As I am just discovering this band's sound for the first time, I'm picking up on some metal influences, some hard rock influences, even some psychedelic grooves from the 60's and 70's... but most of all, this is get-off-of-your-ass-and-move-it rock n roll at it's finest!

As I've continued on this journey to discover and help "promote" some of the finest indie artists around the world, I've become spoiled by the immense talent that is coming out of the UK. Euphoria Audio, Slam Cartel, Melic, Roadside, The Verdict, The New Caldera, Ben Semmens, Rum Honey... and now, I proudly add Stone Kings to the ever growing list of not just the best UK indie rockers, but some of the best indie rockers period!

Song of the day for 9/27/2012

Hey everyone! Who's ready for some more of that UK indie rock goodness?

Today's song of the day is brought to you by London's own Melic! One of my more recent discoveries and quickly becoming one of my favorites, Melic blends the many stylistic influences of each band member to make up one of the more unique sounds you won't find on mainstream radio... yet!

Equal parts funk, rock, classical and metal thrown together with a singer/songwriter groove make them one of London's hottest indie bands, Melic is made up of Mark Hitchcock, vocals/guitar; Steve Hitchcock, bass/vocals; Romy Bylin, saxophone/keyboards and Andrew Coogan, drums.

The more I discover the UK sound, the more jealous of those of you who live in the UK I become! This is one helluva time for you musically. Please take advantage of the opportunity you have to take back music from the stodgy record execs who have lost touch with music that matters!

Settle in and turn up the volume, because Melic is about to rock your earholes with Nowhere I'd Rather Be!

Check them out on their website, follow them on Twitter, like them on Facebook, and by all means necessary, spread the word... this doesn't work without YOUR support!

Song of the day for 9/26/2012

Hey, hey, hey! Who's in the mood for some incredible indie music? I thought so!!!

Today's song of the day is brought to you by SoCal indie band August Rising. Unfortunately for us, the band is currently on an indefinite hiatus after having recently lost their bass player. But that doesn't mean that we can't enjoy what they have been nice enough to give us of themselves to this point! I was originally going to share just one song with you, but as I was lamenting on the hiatus, I decided that they deserved more than just a song!

August Rising is without a doubt one of the few indie acts that could easily displace a dozen or more acts currently on mainstream pop and rock radio. The songwriting far surpasses most of what is commercially available right now, and the passion with which they present their art to us is unparallelled. Do yourself and your ears a favor and go out and get everything you can by this band. Your world will be a much better place with August Rising in it... I know mine is!

Naked On Roller Skates

Yes, you did read the title of this post correctly. Today, I'm introducing you to Boston area band Naked On Roller Skates.

It was back in February of this year that I finally made it to my first (of many) Lit On the Flash shows, this one at the Empire Dine & Dance in Portland, ME. Also that night, I was first introduced to 2 other Maine indie acts, Temperature of the Sun and When Particles Collide (both bands based in Bangor, ME). It was the 2nd act on the bill that night that really stuck with me right off the bat, Naked On Roller Skates.  Led by the vocals of Leesa Coyne (Mmmm... Leesa <--- yes, I'm a guy and she can sing her ass off and is smoking hot!), lead guitarist Travis Richter, bassist Kevin Harvey and drummer Aaron Zak, Naked On Roller Skates has that rare indie sound that is unmistakably equal parts 110% original and radio ready to stand on its own and make a mark on the recording industry.

That night at the Empire I bought their debut EP I Lost My Heart in the Battle and have been hooked on them since.

I've anxiously been awaiting their 2nd EP, which last I heard was in the mixing stages, so we can expect more great tunes from them soon... provided they haven't knifed each other in the process of getting the new EP finished!

Song of the day for 9/23/2012

Hey everyone! The weekend is drawing to an end, but let's not think of it terms of an ending. Let's look forward to the week ahead and all of the great music there is out there to discover together! Let's close the week out on a high note, shall we? Today's song of the day is brought to you by South Africa's best kept secret, Zoey's Fallacy... one of my all-time favorite bands! Turn up the volume and get ready to feel the passion of Don't Count On Me.

Oh Crap! Ninjas

Hello again everyone out there on the world wide web! What's everyone up to this evening? Me? Just listening to some tunes... got the iPod cranking again and one of my absolute all-time favorite songs comes on (Someday by Oh Crap! Ninjas), so I thought I'd revisit some David Gielan tunes with you!

I am a firm believer that I would be missing out on something in life had I not discovered the music of David Gielan. It wasn't until I got into his music that I realized what a pile of shit mainstream radio has been serving up for us for years. I credit him with opening my eyes to the world of the indie artist. One of David's finest moments musically, in my humble opinion, was THIS ALBUM by THIS BAND.

I'm silently cheering for an OC!N reunion... maybe an EP in the future, who knows? I do know that I have mixed feelings about Geffen Records screwing the pooch on signing this band though. Chances are I would have heard of them a lot sooner than I did, but the downside may have been David Gielan becoming a HUGE rock n roll superstar and we wouldn't have gotten his best to date from him... The Imperfect Tense!

Go out and get this album now... it belongs in your music collection!!!

Song of the day for 9/21/12

It's Friday!!!!

How has everyone's week been? Mine has been great... family, friends and good music trump anything that life throws at me :)

For today's song of the day, we're going to revisit an old friend- someone who has frequently been mentioned time and again in this very blog, and someone who I am glad to be a part of spreading his music. It's time to rediscover Games We Play by my friend David Geftakys!

If you've kept up with my blog, or if you follow me on Twitter (@cgnipp), you know that I am a proud card-carrying member of #TeamDG_Airplay. Any station that plays David's music is constantly bombarded by yours truly with request after request to spin his tunes. After all, as we've discussed on many an occasion within the confines of this very blog- THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR THESE ARTISTS WITHOUT YOU!!!

Also, over the course of this past year, David has been making waves within the indie music community. He was recently nominated for 3 Best Artist awards for the 2013 Artists In Music Awards! A strong, fan push has been made to help support David and #TeamDG_Vote is doing their best to get the word out! Please take a few moments to help David out and throw a vote his way for Best Video (for Games We Play of course!), Best Rock Artists and Best Adult Contemporary Artist.

Song(s) of the day for 9/20/2012

Are you in for a treat today! Not only are we closing in on the weekend, you get to experience The VeraGroove!

Phoenix, AZ based The VeraGroove are made up of Rick Moore, vocals/guitar; Corey Groove, bass; Sean Lee, keys; Johnny Groove, drums; and Ben Broyles, saxophone/alternate percussion. With a sound that encompasses a little it of reggae, a little bit of rock n roll and a whole lot of soul, The VeraGroove's sound is best described by their SoundCloud bio:

"Music is often classified and categorized into genre. We divide and control which types of melodies and rhythms determine the sound of, at least in our own opinions, rock, country, classical, or jazz, etc... However, as we ascend and rise above a heavily commercial musical threshold, more and more bands are moving away from formula driven blueprints and are experimenting and venturing into new artistic territories. The Veragroove is a culmination of this kind of experiment. Derived from "Truth in Music", the Veragroove collective faces the musical challenge that what may be music to some may not be music to others. "

I couldn't have done them justice any other way! These guys are amazing, and I hope you enjoy their music as much as I do!

Song of the day for 9/19/2012

It's time for a song of the day! Making a return to this blog is Euphoria Audio, who were originally featured in my British Invasion blog (7/11/12). Euphoria Audio is one of those bands that you hear playing on a indie internet station and wonder why the hell the record industry hasn't discovered them yet. I can answer that for you, but that's a different blog for a different day! For now, sit back and enjoy Our Yesterdays.

Simpleton & Cityfolk

Hey everyone! Just stopping by to introduce you to another incredible indie band, Chicago based Simpleton & Cityfolk!

Steeped in Americana with just the right mixture of folk and rock thrown in, Simpleton & Cityfolk are made up of Geoff Glenn, lead vocals/rhythm guitar; Chris Bennett, lead guitar/backing vocals; Chris Williams, upright bass/backing vocals; Mike Skowronski, drums/backing vocals. The band formed just a few years ago but have already made their mark in and around the greater Chicago area as one of the best up-and-coming bands.

This past summer saw the release of their debut EP, The Williams Account. I couldn't wait for this to come out and needless to say, 3 months later, the new still hasn't worn off of the sound for me! The band has also just released a video for their song "Porch Light" off of the same EP:

Take a few minutes of your day to discover this amazing band. They have one of the freshest sounds around today. Not too country, not too rock, just a perfect combination that kinda takes you back somewhat to the mellow side of the 70's... probably before the time of any of the band members, but I remember them well!

Song of the day for 9/18/12

Hello blogosphere! Happy Tuesday to everyone. Today's song of the day is actually an album of the day. Metal heads, rejoice! I give to thee Savage Wasteland by Devastator! We had some unbelievable end of summer weather here in the Northeast yesterday... windows down, radio up kind of weather! Well, the poor lady sitting next to me at a light in Manchester, Maine may not have felt the same way when the primal scream at the beginning of Cowboy hit her earholes... I just shrugged, smiled and turned it up LOUDER!!!

This album hits hard, so prepare yourself... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Song of the day for 9/17/12

It's Monday! That means it's a new week and a new opportunity for YOU to share your favorite indie music with your friends, loved ones and even complete strangers!!!

Today's songs of the day are brought to you by an old favorite of mine. Today, we're revisiting In Air! Back when I got into this whole indie music kick that I'll be on forever, this band Nobody Gets Killed starting following me on Twitter. The next thing I knew, I was downloading their debut album Just A Seed off of iTunes. Before I knew it, I was hooked and there was no turning back. My favorite song off of that album is Breakdown, but in all honesty, my completely biased opinion is that there really isn't a bad track at all on this album!

Now let's fast forward to today. Nobody Gets Killed has embarked on the next phase of their musical career. A name change to In Air has got the indie music world abuzz over what is next for this SoCal band. Judging from their single Flip Side, I'd say it's pretty safe to assume more of the same great music, with a new flare, is just around the corner from these guys. All I know is, October and the new In Air album can't get here quick enough!

In Air is defending their title as Best Alternative Artist in the 2013 Artists In Music Awards coming up soon. If you like what you hear, take a moment to give them your vote and encourage others to as well!

Good Monday morning to you all! I'm making up this morning for not posting a song of the day yesterday by giving you a treat. Today's songs of the day are brought to you by Ben Semmens. OFFICIAL WORLDWIDE RELEASE DAY! When Particles Collide: Pop! Pop! Bang! Bang!

Hello again all you indie music fans! Today, I give to you the long overdue introduction (on this blog) of When Particles Collide, Maine's original powerhouse rock duo! Today is the official worldwide release of their first full length album, Pop! Pop! Bang! Bang! I was fortunate to get this album earlier in the week and have not been able to stop listening to it! As a duo, Sasha and Chris bring it better than the majority of full bands on mainstream radio today. And when I say bring it, you never get the full effect like you do at a live show!

Hailing from Bangor, Maine, When Particles Collide is made up of Sasha Alcott (vocals/guitar) and Chris Viner (drums). With a sound that takes you back to the punk rock days of the late 70's and early 80's, When Particles Collide is helping to reintroduce a new generation to the roots of a genre nearly extinct in today's music world. I consider myself one of the lucky ones to have taken in a few of their shows and to also have the opportunity to meet them both. As artists, they separate themselves with a sound unique to them, and they also share their passion for music by supporting local talents in and around the great state of Maine.

New EP from The Verdict

You didn't actually think I was done sharing new music with you today, did you???

We're staying on the British indie rock theme for the day. Making another appearance on this blog, hailing from Liverpool, UK, is The Verdict! This is yet another fine example of some incredible indie music coming out of the UK. They've been a favorite of mine for some time now, and the release of this EP only solidifies that standing! Give it a listen and see if Rum & Coke doesn't get you off of your ass and groving right along!!!

For those of you who follow me on Twitter (@cgnipp), you know that I have a fondness for British indie rock bands. There are soooo many insanely talented indie artists on the other side of the pond that I share as many of them on Twitter with you as I can. Which brings me to the songs of the day, brought to you by The New Caldera! There's a reason why this band is making it's second appearance on my blog (look for the "British Invasion" post from July)- they are that damn good! Retro sound, smart lyrics, excellent vocals and some of the smoothest grooves ever recorded! Check them out today and find out why I'm such a big fan... hopefully you will be too!

Ryan Star: From 11:59 to Stay Awhile

I decided to break a bit from the norm and share an album with you from Ryan Star. Very exciting things have happen for Ryan recently. For those of you living under a rock who may not have heard, Mr. Star recently signed with Island Records, had his first single released with them, Stay Awhile, and made his late night television debut on The Tonight Show w/Jay Leno. He's also working on his next studio album which will be his first release on the Island Records label. As a primer to what is to come, please take a moment and familiarize yourself with his first major record label album, 11:59!

Editor's note: Even though my heart is in the world of indie music these days, there is still some quality to be found on mainstream radio. Although Ryan Star may not be the household name he should be, he gets love from quite a few traditional over-the-air stations across the country. This is my way of introducing some of the most passionate music out there to those of you who may not have already heard of him. He's poised for the rest of the world to stand up and take notice, so RIGHT NOW is the time for you to get in on the R* phenomena!

And to keep you on track, make sure you check out his newest single, Stay Awhile, now available on iTunes!

Song of the day for September 2, 2012... part 3

Now, let's take it down a few notches and mellow out to the smooth sounds of Mariana Bell. This is one of my original indie favorites and someone who needs more space on my blog! Enjoy Restless, hopefully Mariana Bell will become one of your favorite artists too!

Song of the day for September 2, 2012... part 2

And here is more of me making it up to you today... I give you NYC based rockers Last Stand for Lucy and their in-your-face-rocking tune Burn Everything!!!

Song of the day for September 2, 2012... part 1

This is me making up to you for not posting a song(s) of the day yesterday... and this is a GOOD one too!! I give to you Out In the Cold by Broken Romeo! I don't think these guys have EVER had a bad day in the studio, and this is one helluva rocking tune! It actually takes me back somewhat to the days of hair metal and power ballads!
